Role of software solutions in the construction process

Within the phases discussed in Construction Process, construction projects typically involve a complex array of specific interdependent activities, undertaken by multiple participants. Each phase will typically have multiple sub-phases and processes. Many participants may be contributing only a small part to the construction process, but regardless of the size of the contribution, each activity needs to be undertaken in a coordinated and sequenced fashion. Moreover, in addition to the overall timing and budget, individual tasks need to be completed within tight time frames and within set budgets. Changes affecting any one task (or the need to resolve conflicting elements (or clashes) of two or more tasks) can have a significant knock-on effect on the balance of the project, from a planning, scheduling or procurement standpoint. Failure to resolve these conflicts can imperil both the timing and cost elements of a project.

The challenges of completing a project on time and within budget can be exacerbated by fluctuations in cost of materials (putting margins at risk), complex supply chains, labour issues and/or logistic constraints. In light of these challenges, access to real time information concerning the full range of data and analysis encompassing the planning, scheduling, budgeting, documentation and implementation phases and processes of a project, the ability to communicate with multiple participants simultaneously and accurately and the ability to address so-called change order management (namely managing the impact of any one change on all areas of the project that are directly or indirectly affected) can be critical in managing and completing a project on time and within budget.
